Venice Carnival Costumes 2nd day
My first day in Venice coincide with the carnival celebration during which participants from around the world gather in the most elaborate costumes and masks to celebrate the last days before lent leading into Easter.
The Carnival of Venice began in the 12th century, flourishing during the Renaissance. It allowed masked anonymity across classes. Banned in 1797 by Napoleon, it was revived in the 1980s.
This year saw contestants from around the world being invited to showcase their elaborate masks and costumes with a prize for the best dressed being announced each of the seven days.
